As science and technology become ever more sophisticated, and advances in the field take place at an ever accelerating rate, so research and education in the sciences in graduate schools to generate researchers and highly skilled professionals, especially in Master’s programs, become ever more necessary. This is reflected in the current employment market, where more companies are becoming increasingly aggressive in efforts to attract students in post-graduate programs. Some have even made a Master’s degree a requirement for employment.
It was within this climate that in 2003, the Graduate School of Science and Engineering increased the number of applicants admitted to the Master’s program by 40 students. And, in keeping with its motto: “Distinctive Majors, Unique Graduate Programs,” the School offers a curriculum capable of catering to a variety of specialist fields, including Secondary Courses, and a wide range of specialist fields majors that will form the basis of the 21st Century COE Program “Research on Security and Reliability in Electronic Society.” The School has also set up a research management program and has committed itself to fostering outstanding students capable of working on the frontlines of international research. Together with the Department of Information and Systems Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Research and Development Initiative, the Information and Systems Engineering Course, one of the hubs of the COE Program mentioned earlier, earned a rating of “A+” in 2003, from the “Evaluation of University Activities from the Viewpoint of Strengthening Industrial Competitiveness,” a joint study commissioned to Mitsubishi Research Institute and Kawaijuku Educational Institution by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, for being in the top 5% of institutions surveyed.
